Okay, let's face it... most video games have not turned out to make good movies. The original Mortal Kombat was a hit. Street Fighter is enough to cause the most iron clad stomach to hurl. The Resident Evil movies are okay, but most wouldn't classify them as great. Doom? Interesting, but how many plan on watching that over and over again? It doesn't even have the cult appeal of the Punisher with Dolph Lundgren ("What do you call X number of murders in one year?!?" "Work in progress."). Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children was okay, but unless you knew the game, the story line was REALLY choppy.

If you were going to turn a video game into a movie, which video game would you pick, and why? And why do you think it would be successful when all the others have failed.

I would jump on the tailcoats of World of Warcraft's recent fame and make a movie based upon the old Warcraft games.  About the elusive battle between the humans (and their allies) and the Orcs (and their allies).

I'd flesh out the storyline from the first 3 warcrafts and voila a ready made movie with a pop culture following already established.

If you did the art really well, like in LoTR -- you should be setup for a great blockbuster.

Hmmm.. following that vein... why do World of Warcraft when you have the non dying phenomenon in StarCraft...
Heck its like a more enjoyable and better written Aliens vs. Predator...

IN... SPACE!!!!

Your just hooked on all space sci-fi stuff, so of course it would appeal to you.. Smiley

Note: Star Trek Online, Starcraft and you even made a reference to AVP. hehe.

I think right now the market is happily boasting medieval type movies and successfully so.

Why change what's been working lately? Smiley

Starcraft never had a real storyline to it either, not like Warcraft.  So you'd have to hire more intelligent people to develop storylines instead of just stealing the already created ones .. hehe

Starcraft has a storyline. They even put it into novel format. Now let me make myself clear. You said storyline. You didn't say tolerable storyline. And since we're talking games, no, it's not implied.

It's real. You can see it (although you'll be blind afterwards). It's just atrocious. Especially the confederate hee-haw garbage.

I don't know how you're going to take this, but a Warcraft Movie is already in the works, supposedly.

http://www.gamespot.com/news/2006/05/16/news_6151334.html?part=rss&tag=gs_&subj=6151334

The link to this interview was up on the World of Warcraft site back in May.  If I remember correctly, the movie was going to be "based on the franchise" but not "on a specific game" so it could live "within the cosmology" of Warcraft without interfering with the continuity of any of the the games/over-arching storyline.

You stole my thunder. I was going to say that!

Moving on, what game would I turn into a movie? They already did Maro Brothers huh? So ok lets say maybe Frogger? or maybe even Q-bert? Modern games, I would say lets turn a game into a movie would have to be a non-MMO, and have very little plot, and write a story around the action. However it woudl be horrable like street fighter unless they decided to go past the "B" film budget... Even the movie into an MMO thing as been done with The Matrix. So lets do this... how about we make a movie, and incoperate game options into it... imagine 300 people sitting in the movie theater all will controllers and their "votes" or what not determined how the movie turned out? Hey if someone does this I was 2% of the profits! You know some people would go over and over again just to see what happens... yeah... and charge like $15... and make it 2.5 hours long... ok Im getting off subject...

...

How about Pitfall?

I'm fairly certain this has already been done before too.  I'm not sure exactly where, but I think in some theme-park type places they have 'interactive moves' where the audiance all has little remote controls and at certain points everyone presses a button to 'vote' on the direction of the movie.

Sorry man, looks like you're just behind the times.

Ah prove it first.

I swear I remember seeing something on TV about this some number of years ago.  All I've been able to find is stuff that makes reference to a movie called "Mr. Payback" (1995) which apparently bombed horribly and effectivly killed the fledgling genre, hence the reason we don't see any today.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0113863/

http://danieldematteis.wordpress.com/2006/07/30/the-interactive-movie-isnt-dead-until-we-say-it-is/

I thought there might have been more, but I can't find anything else...  Google's not being helpful on this one.

That links was to bounty hunter, but to make a point there is a Spy Hunter movie in the process of being developed and it will have The Rock playing as the main character.  There was also a link somewhere in here, either by article or in just the forums that talked about how The Rock is a video game geek and in that interview he talks about the new Spy Hunter movie.

Here is the IMDB link.

Hopefully it'll be good.  The Rock is getting better at acting, although he sucked when he first tried.
