Image You may have seen the movie, or maybe you pulled an allnighter on the Sci-Fi Network to watch one of their numerous marathon sessions of SG-1 and/or SG Atlantis.

Now after almost 10 years of series additions, Stargate will be breaking out of the small screen, and into the MMOG grinder. Can our intrepid band of travelers make the Sci-Fi MMOG jump that so many others have failed?

To find out I went and had a brief chat with Dan Elggren, Senior Producer of Stargate Worlds.

Let's see what Dan had to say concerning the ongoing development of Stargate Worlds.

With the stringent standards and criticisms a TV show to MMOG conversion will face, how has the development team persevered?

Right now, we’re really too busy with development to worry about what people might say down the road. Having said that, getting things right is very important to us. We’ve got more than 200 episodes of the original Stargate SG-1 and three seasons of Stargate Atlantis to draw on, and we are utilizing this fantastic resource to guide every step we take.

What has been the biggest hurdle in the development of SGW?

We are doing some things in Stargate Worlds that no one has ever done before. Developing a combat system that reflects the modern combat style seen in the series while incorporating high-tech weapons is quite a challenge, but our top-flight development team is up to the task.

What has been the enjoyable part of bringing the highly developed universe of SG to life?

There’s so much back story in the Stargate universe that there is never time to get bored with what you are working on. In some ways, it’s like creating an MMORPG based on history because we’ve got more than a decade of Stargate to work with. Learning that history has been a great experience. I think we also were pleasantly surprised by the passion of the many fans of the Stargate series. The fans are knowledgeable and they have expectations that we have set as a goal for Stargate Worlds.

What new ideas are the developers most anxious to see implemented?

I mentioned the combat system earlier and we are all excited about that. But the Stargate universe is about so much more than fighting. That’s why we developed the “X” of Stargate Worlds, a system that keeps us focused during game design. Combat is an important part of any MMORPG, so it forms the core of the “X.” Surrounding that core, however, is the concept of exploration. Exploration is overlooked in many MMORPGs as players concentrate on grinding through levels. At its emotional core, Stargate SG-1 was always about human curiosity and the consequences that can come along with opening Pandora’s Box. Stargate Worlds players will be able to discover alien cultures and ancient technologies, and I think that’s an exciting and underdeveloped concept in gaming.

Is there any statement you would use to describe why PC Gamers should stay in the loop, concerning the development of SGW?

To date, science fiction MMORPGs haven’t been able to gain the same traction as their fantasy counterparts. Stargate Worlds will change that.

I'll end with the standard GM question: If you could add anything to Stargate Worlds, what would it be?

We’ve got some flexibility when it comes to telling our story and you can expect to see some new twists when you login to Stargate Worlds, but we don’t want to give anything away too soon.
