Well another late night in front of the ol' Wide Screen and another deep train of thought, that I must typeout. Check it, I am watching HBO-HD and as I look at Ah'nold's 1984 Mug saying. "Are JoO Saraaaaah Kah'Nor", 'Ding!!!' the light goes off. That whole Terminator thing would make a great MMORPG. Think on it, to make a MMORPG that combines PvE and PvP elements together you will need to have a protagonist group and an organized group of antagonist. Movies like James Bond would never work because the "bad" guys always change (read: die), same thing for Mission Impossible series. Conan the Barbarian might work but there is no "singular" entity or uniting faction you can hate, or love, e.g. the Imperial Empire or good ol' Darth Vader. That got me to thinking, which currently existing games or movie franchises would make a perfect MMORPG platforms for development? I mean I want to avoid fantasy route if possbile, because while I love World of Whorecraft if I see one more elf, orc or dwarf I am gonna puke. "The Elves!!! The ELVES!!!" So after careful analysis and plenty of Dos Equis (the writers brew). I give you this list:
Top 10 MMORPG You'll Never See (because they make too much damn sense) 10. Starship Troopers - Ok let's remove the movie from our visual and auditory data banks and think about the story line premise. You have soldiers... you have civilians.... you have Big ravenous bugs. The storyline is wide open for liberal interpretation, and plus its a sci-fi premise that should be explored. Plus the ability to dismember your opponents is a delightful plus in the PvE category. PvP might be sketchy since I haven't decided how to handle the bugs as PC's... but then thats not my problem. 9. Shrek - Yes dammit you read it right... Shrek. Hell World of Shrek. Imagine all the latitude you could have in making a MMORPG based on fanciful world of Puss... in boots. Plenty of Far far Away places to see. Classes to become and fairy tales to bastardize. Yes it includes elves and dwarves... but it also have music by "Kool and the Gang" and "Smash Mouth". It also has the ability to be a MMO family game and the character creation could give City of Hero's/Villian's a serious run. Hell all its missing is something deep fried... and smothered in chocolate. 8. Blade Runner - This is one of the greatest Sci-Fi movies of all time, and yet it hasn't been tapped in any online form.... not even a crapalicious FPS to its name. I mean you have cyborg replicants, throw in corrupt BioGenetic Corps, the Police, and mercenaries, combine that with a rich background ripe for MMO interpretation and you have a gold mine of possibilities. All you'd need to do is remove those freaky 3D asian billboards. Mmmmmmm GoooOoooDddd... 7. X-COM UFO Defense - I'll never forget playing this turn-based game and running into my first Terror Mission. I remember leading my crack group of X-COM badasses around a pitch black corner and stumbling into some strange 'Alien' reject called a Chryssalid. One second later my crack crew of badasses were all walking zombies, impregnanted with Chryssalid spore... Needless to say I was pissed. Irregardless the world of X-COM would be great for a PC MMOs, the classes for both Humans and Maritans are already put in the game... hell wash, game balance and release. 6. WarHammer 40k - Oh yea back to more elves and orcs. However lets advance the time line 40k years and add in particle beam cannons and you have something worth making me not groan, "The Elves!! The ELVES!!!". The vast history of the Warhammer Universe is beyond my typing, Needless to say don't make a game based on a World of Warcraft template. Grow a pair of balls, put them on the table and make a game that can revolutionize Sci-Fi MMO's. 5. GTA - Grand Theft Auto - A game so diverse with character's and plot lines so livid could easily cross over into MMO status. Imagine every little thug trying to carve out their own kingdom. Tack on a "M" or "A" rating on the game and you have your 1st "Adults only" MMO that would actually have some finances and not be a crappy porn wannabe. Plus you get to bust out with mobster taunts from the 'GodFather' to 'Boyz in da Hood'. 4. Resident Evil - Dammit why isn't there a horror MMO out. I mean a full fledged "Were all GONNA DIE!!!", kinda deal. I was gonna use "Dawn of the Dead" or something else however Resident Evil has all of my afore mentioned elements you have good & bad humans, bad corportation, really really bad virally infected, mutated, slobbering for you brains undead, add in some bosses (e.g. Nemesis anyone). And you have a perfect MMO scenario. That screwed up RE: Online does not count since it sucked, and was never MMO in spirit. 3. Terminator - Ok who doesn't want to play as T-800 running around slaughter all of humanity, or maybe be a poor human trying to survive in a nuclear waste land? Time Portals, T-1000, Dogs and cats living together its madness. That's why it'll make a great MMO. It has already generated factions an easy to design class system. Added Bonus: the hawtness of Linda Hamiliton, I mean come on. 2. Aliens vs. Predator - Once again forget the Taco Bell salmonella laced gastro intestinal, "Oh my gawd are those my shoe's comming outta my ass" crap fest that was the movie, instead look at the story premise. I personally like the Riply Era versions, Once again three cleanly defined and balanced (mostly) races. Three reasons to shoot the hell outta each other. Tradeskills to plunder, face huggers to well... hug. IR laser beam thingies to shoot. I mean hell screw Planetside this could work. 1. World of Starcraft - Ok I bought the April Fool's Joke for this hook, line, and sinker. The screenshots the game premise the whole atmosphere had me all psyched... I called everyone I knew letting them know I was going the first in line for this puppy. Then came the real news... I was crushed. I felt like I had dropped in the bar in the poverbial prison shower room, needless to say the after affects were.... unpleasant. Irregardless this would be the most logical MMORPG to make I mean its over 10 years old and yet.... it won't die.... combine that with the success of WoW and Vivendi Blizzard could easily ship a PC box of popsicle sticks with World of Starcraft stamped to the outside and make billions. |
