What do I mean by that? Well consider this, my first MMO was UO and the game was great -- or at least in my mind it was. I played it everyday for the first year and a half, played it occassional/often for a total of 7 years. I am a PVP/PK'er at heart, so any new game that comes out boasting a new PVP method I am quick to pick up and give it a whirl. None of the new games ever seem to compare to that first game. After giving them a test run and trying out all their new features and new "PVP" methods, I always find them lacking in entertainment and intrinsic value and thus they suck.
But do I really ever give it a fair shot? I started to realize probably about 3 or 4 months ago that I never gave any games after UO a chance to succeed. In my mind they had already failed to compare and therefore sucked. This new revelation caused me to go back to some of those games I previously dismissed and try to play them with a fresh outlook, which, by the way, is easier said then done.
Why does the first game you play stick with you in such a way? Is it expectational mindset conditioning? Perhaps it is because we were new and uncorrupted? In my self research trying to answer this question, I have come to believe that it is because we were uncorrupted, so any experience was new and fresh and exciting. Could that be all though? Perhaps not, I tend to see a shift in the market -- I remember in the old days of UO people would roleplay, yes even the pkers did. That is something you do not see very often in games anymore, people are so wrapped up in attaining the highest level, the best equipment and the top rankings. Has the game industry devolved into mindless monsters and endless levels? What happened to the RP aspect of these games?
To sum it all up, the reason the first MMO ruins all other games, at least in my opinion, is for the following reasons. 1. Our first game was our first introduction to MMO's, it was new to us and we were the virgins of the those virtual worlds. 2. The games have changed since our introduction, the initial concept is gone and now marketing groups are redefining the term MMO, from the once loved Roleplay style to the all new Time Sink style that it has been morphed into.
