Travis gives a snapshot review of the new WotC title, Cityscape. Here's what he has to say:
This book is the best source for creating a city from the ground up. If there was a factor that needed to be considered and was not here or the Dungeone Master's Guide then I don’t know where to get the stats you need.
Chapter 1 covers citys by type (port, slaver capital etc). It also looks at culture, unusual locations, hazards and districts.
Chapter 2 is dedicated to the urban adventurer. It has new feats, contacts, social class, spells for the player. In addition, it shows how to use these new features and still have fun. (Because that's the point of the game, after all. - Ed)
Chapter 3 is all about politics and power. It covers political systems, houses, guilds, organizations and churches. Chapter 3 gets into what are the pluses and minuses of being a member of each of these power brokers.
Chapter 4 deals with the events and encounters in the city. There is a section on how to deal with planned and unplanned events (disasters). Another section is all about how to treat NPCs who are encountered on the street. There is also a few new city centric monsters.
Chapter 5 is about running a city both from a Dungeon Master's perspective and as a player. It talks about city history and the urban crawl (taxes, race relations, jobs, commoner/expert, locations). The chapter also covers things that take place outside the dungeon (crime sprees, guild/organization conflicts, etc).
It does not take a connoisseur to see that this book is a tremendous resource to any DM and should be used if you are doing a heavy city/city centric campaign. I would give this book a seven out of ten.
