Image Got a chance to listen in on a status update for EA Mythic's Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning which is based on Games Workshop's venerable miniature based tabletop wargame.

Playable factions will include the Humans, Dwarves and Elves which will represent Order and the Orcs, Globlins, Chaos Mutants, and Dark Elves reprising their nefarious roles as Chaos.

You can mark me down for the "Greenskins" when WAR comes out.

WAR will use the rich history and lore of Game Workshop's to create a unique gaming experience in the MMOG world. WAR unique features will be extensive usage of the Realm vs. Realm conflict, which will be familiar to those who have played Mythic's Dark Age of Camelot. Also unique to the game will be a "Public" Quest system which will potentially allow for a more freeform game environment. Thus adventuring, exploring and/or RvR can be its own reward as quest spontaneously arise from mundane actions.

Guild Management is also slated to receive attention, once again using DAoC Guild management as a starting point. Character class variety is also a key factor in WAR, currently 24 classes have been designed for the game. So character variety should potentially be easy to attain.

The little touches that are also planned in maintaining character individuality includes "seasoning" higher level characters, so that casual observation may be able to determine the grizzled veteran (i.e. high level player) versus the low level neophyte (i.e. noob). If these kinds of touches get carried to fruition then this could spell the end of the identical hordes of high level zerg.

After digesting the statements of the developers and outside sources it appears that WAR will greatly expand upon the work begun with their initial MMO offering DAoC. Having a solid foundation to draw from should help the development of the game and hopefully lead a strong impact on the MMOG landscape.

I would definitely recommend any MMOG-aphile keep an eye on this game as it has the potential to address the flaws that have plagued so many second and early 3rd generation MMO's.
